Post 9: The Transformative Power of Silence—Opening God’s Workshop in Your Life

Align with God’s will through the power of silence. Discover how Celestial Habits and virtuous thinking invite the Holy Ghost to transform your life, empowering purpose and creativity.

Entering God’s Workshop

In recent weeks, I’ve reflected on the power of silence and pondering in deepening my connection with God. It reminded me of a book I read years ago, God Works Through Silence by Robert A. Russell. As I revisited its pages, these words leapt out:

“By withdrawing your conscious thought from the relative world and centering it in the One, you open the channel through which your needs are supplied, your desire granted, and your spiritual claim will be met.”

This truth is profound. By entering the silence and aligning our thoughts with God, we create space for His divine workshop to operate within us. Russell continues:

“No matter how persistent the disease, how intricate the problem or how devastating the lack, the moment you enter the Silence and find within yourself the equivalent of your desires, conditions will begin to improve.”

Silence is not emptiness. It is alignment.

Habits That Anchor the Soul

As I’ve sought to align my desires more fully with God’s will, I’ve also responded to long-standing promptings — including one to maintain my Mongolian language skills from my missionary service. Obedience opens doors long before we understand why.

Alongside this, I’ve practiced what Maurice Harker refers to as MANPWR habits — daily disciplines that strengthen spiritual self-mastery:

  1. Minister to someone each day
  2. Take action and remain accountable
  3. Say no to poor habits, replacing them with righteous ones
  4. Engage in heartfelt prayer
  5. Write down inspirations and plans
  6. Read scriptures and uplifting books

These habits didn’t merely help me stop negative behaviors — they created space for something higher to take root.

Celestial Habits for Spiritual Growth

Years ago, after hearing a Church leader teach on Christ’s words in Matthew 12:43–45, a question was posed:

What prevents the house, once swept and garnished, from being overtaken again?

The answer was simple: good habits.

From that moment, I began calling them Celestial Habits — daily standards that keep the soul filled with light. Rather than overwhelming goals, these habits focus on what is done today, one day at a time.

This approach aligns with the Lord’s counsel to let virtue garnish our thoughts unceasingly (Doctrine and Covenants 121:46). When the mind is occupied with creation, service, and light, darkness finds no resting place.

Silence—A Tool for Creation

Silence has become one of the most powerful tools in this process. I now often work in silence or with instrumental music, allowing space for pondering, inquiry, and planning. Where words once distracted, stillness now clarifies.

In silence, creativity flows. Direction sharpens. Joy deepens.

Christ Himself modeled this rhythm — withdrawing often, then returning to act with power. Silence is not withdrawal from life; it is preparation for greater service.

As Robert A. Russell observed:

“The Law is Infinite. But it can give to you only what you can take, and you can take only what you really are.”

Silence enlarges what we are able to receive.

Closing Reflection

When silence and righteous habits work together, God’s workshop opens within the soul. Thoughts elevate. Purpose clarifies. Creation replaces distraction.

As you create space through silence and intentional living, you will find yourself not merely aspiring to emulate Christ — but actively becoming more like Him, day by day.
